"The central reason for Board meetings after all, is to define what difference the organization should make in the world."
John Carver, Boards that Make a Difference, 3rd Ed, Jossey-Bass 2006
Miriam O'Brien was accepted into the advanced course in Carver Policy Governance® and, in 2007, she completed the intensive program led by John and Miriam Carver. Over the years Miriam has worked with a number of boards to develop board policies and to review, refine and update existing policies.
We can provide expert advice and assistance in developing board policies to suit your organisation. As part of the process we work with the board or its governance committee and provide sessions for the full board on how to make best use of the policies. We also offer introductory sessions for boards that are considering adopting the Carver model or other approaches to governance.
We are often asked to work with boards to:
develop a set of policies based on the Carver model
review and update existing policies
provide training and refresher sessions, particularly when there is a change of directors
adapt existing policies to suit the governance framework of the Carver model.
To find out more about Carver Policy Governance® , please give us a call or send us an email.
If you are considering adopting a Carver approach to governance, here is a general guide to how we would work with you:
First we will talk with you and do some reading to get to know your board and organisation, your aspirations, values and culture.
We will listen to you: to the board as a whole and to individual directors, to find out what you want from your chosen governance framework (whether it is the Carver model or other approach).
We will talk with you about the benefits of a Carver model and discuss with you whether it will deliver what you are wanting and if so, how. If not, we will discuss and offer other approaches. (We've never yet come across a board that says it wouldn't benefit from a sound governance framework and written board policies.)
We will work with your board or governance committee and tailor a set of policies to suit. We can offer to tailor one of our generic sets of polices, which we have developed, and adapt it to suit your board.
We will hold another session with the full board to work through the draft policies and refine them.
We will be available to assist and answer any questions as your board becomes familiar with the policies.
Ongoing support: We can provide refresher sessions with your Board and review and update the policies as requested.
