Experience
Miriam designed and managed a workforce planning process when working with the Department of Agriculture in South Australia. Since that time, she has conducted numerous organisation and operations reviews in a wide variety of contexts. Examples include:
Victorian Government: Miriam O'Brien has played a major role in several recent projects for the Victorian Government, including a review of business processes and management structure for the Office of the Director of Public Transport; and a review of administration services and grants administration for the Department of Innovation, Industry & Regional Development, Victoria.
University Administration and Structural Review: Miriam O'Brien played a key role in this major review of the management, administrative arrangements, and decision-making structures of Northern Territory University. The study had national significance in the light of the Australia-wide restructuring of higher education.
Organisation Status Review - EcoRecycle Victoria: A high level review for the incoming Board of the organisation and operations of EcoRecycle Victoria, a strategy and funding body of the Victorian government delivering recycling and waste management programs. This review included review of governance, management reporting, human resources, financial and legislative aspects, program management and other areas. We were subsequently commissioned to help the Board and management prepare a strategic plan.
The University of Melbourne - Governance: As member of a small working party, we investigated and designed a new governance structure for the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture, which resulted in the establishment of the Institute of Land and Food Resources at The University of Melbourne.
Aviation Company - Operations Review: We conducted an operations review of the technical services department of a major corporate airline.
City of Brunswick - Organisational Review: This two-part assignment comprised a productivity review to significantly reduce annual expenditure, while achieving corporate objectives and a management review encompassing organisational structure, decision-making and communication systems and processes, resulting in streamlined systems and processes and rationalisation of resources, prior to local government amalgamations.
Review of Garbage Services: We helped a local authority review its garbage services, considering a range of cost and operational options including the introduction of one-person trucks.
